KKR may pick 47% in Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers—the Hyderabad franchisee of the Indian Premier League (IPL)—is learnt to be in final stages of discussions with KKR, the New York-based PE fund, for divesting a significant minority stake. It is leant that KKR has submitted a term sheet for picking about 47% stake in the team at a pre-money valuation of $20 million (Rs 100 crore).

Deccan Chargers eyes $250 million valuation for selling the franchise

Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd. has mandated KPMG Corporate Finance to find a buyer for Deccan Chargers, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise for Hyderabad team. The company is looking at a valuation of $250 million and is prepared to exit. “We are willing to dilute our stake completely if we get the right valuation. We hope to seal the deal within 15-20 days,” a source in the company said.

Gilchrist to lead Deccan Chargers

Adam Gilchrist, the former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, has been appointed captain of the Deccan Chargers, replacing VVS Laxman, who led the team during the inaugural season of the IPL. Darren Lehmann, the former Australia batsman, takes charge as coach, replacing former India player Robin Singh.

Deccan Chargers is preparing to probe the media remarks made by Shahid Afridi and V.V.S. Laxman’s response over the captaincy of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team. Afridi had reportedly blamed Laxman’s leadership abilities for the team’s poor showing during IPL league in June and even suggested that former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist should take over the reins of the side in the next edition of the IPL.

Deccan Chargers ‘would welcome Symonds’

Chargers chief executive Tim Wright said they would love to have Symonds available for the entire 2009 series, which runs from April 10 to June 1. “The Deccan Chargers would - as would any IPL team - want Andrew Symonds in from the very first ball of the competition to the very last ball,” he told AAP.

Laxman hits back after Afridi outburst

Afridi on Monday attributed blame for the Chargers’ poor record on Laxman’s captaincy, saying the 33-year-old veteran had “lost the plot” during the tournament. Afridi’s outburst prompted an angry reaction from Laxman, who said: “Afridi has no team ethics. He should know it was a collective failure because he was part of the team.”

Laxman was reacting to Afridi’s comments to a Pakistani news channel that former Aussie wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist would be a better choice to lead Team Hyderabad and that Twenty20 would not suit Laxman’s style of play and was found wanting on the field despite not living up to the expectations of being a big hitter himself.

Afridi disappointed with his IPL batting performance

It is pertinent to mention that Afridi was a total failure as he could score only 81 runs in nine innings of ten matches he played for Deccan Chargers. “I am extremely disappointed, I failed to contribute for the team with the bat. My team finished at bottom because of my ordinary form. It really hurts me.”
