Simon Taufel, the International Cricket Council (ICC) best-rated umpire has pulled out of the list to officiate in the forthcoming IPL (Indian Premier League) matches. This was revealed by Dheeraj Malhotra, the IPL tournament director.
“Simon Taufel has pulled out due to his personal reasons,” said Malhotra.
Earlier, it may be recalled here that Taufel had expressed his desire to officiate in the IPL matches.
Later confirming it over telephone from Australia, Simon Taufel disclosed the “personal reasons.”
“They have offered the remuneration being too less compared to what the players have been receiving. Being away from the family for so long and accepting such a low fees was not acceptable to me”.
Taufel, at 37, has been an outstanding umpire having won the Umpire of the Year Award four times in a row. Taufel was given the award after the ten Test playing captains and the eight-man panel of match referees submitted their votes. He is already growing weary at the constant travelling his job demands.
The ICC’s four-man selection panel is yet to announe the Elite Panel for umpires. The contracts for the current umpires expire at the end of this month.
“It is not necessarily that he will accept the new posting. It depends what package is offered to him,” the source close to the umpire also said.
