IPL needs international timeslot

Australian captain Ricky Ponting will tonight spearhead a cricket revolution he is worried might eventually destroy some of the game’s most cherished traditions. The Indian Premier League will be launched in the southern city of Bangalore, where Ponting’s Kolkata Knight Riders take on the Bangalore Royal Challengers.

Ponting said the IPL was a great concept, but warned it had the “potential to be the most dangerous thing” that had happened to world cricket. He urged the International Cricket Council to confine the IPL to its present six-week timeslot and curb the threat of players choosing money over playing for their country.

“It’s going to all come down to those in charge of the game,” Ponting said. “If they don’t do something about carving out some sort of window, then I think it could have dire consequences on the overall game.”
